Stage Three: 1:1 Model and sketches

Over the break, I wanted to see if my woven seat idea would actually work, so my dad and I made a rough stool one afternoon, based on a stool we've had for over 15 years (below).

We had a few construction issues, mostly that the drill we used to create the holes for the dowel pieces wasn't really well maintained and so was drilling inaccurate sized holes. So the stool is quite rickety...

Also, to attach some of the leather rings together I used wire which was all we had at the time, so I need to find a neater way to do this.

The rings are really comfortable to sit on, they stretch and move when you sit down.

I then thought briefly about how this stool might be stored, that's another issue I want to work on. I was just really trying to see if the seat would function, so the shape of the stool is just something we did to test this.

Stage Two: Three Concepts and Perspectives

As my ideas are still rather conceptual, I just did some quick sketches on what some of my ideas would look like in Centre Place. I based my views on photos I have taken of the site.

Stage Two: Weaving

I cut strips/rings from the rubber gloves and then linked them into the chain shown above. I just to find a way to secure the links.

These are the leather cricket ball rings and the cardboard roll cut offs weaved together. I like the way it looks like a tangled mess, and I think that it would make a very strong finished product. There isn't really a pattern to the weaving and interlocking yet, I was just trying out the idea.

Woven lino, both front and back views. For the idea I have in mind, i will need much longer strips so I either need to find a way to cleanly join strips or another suplier...

Stage one: (more) Materials

After class this week, I went back to Reverse Art Truck and looked for materials that would be easy and interesting to weave together. These are rubber gloves that I plan to weave together in a chain, then maybe weave seperate chains together to create a suspended seat on a frame.

Lino cutoffs. These are coloured/patterned on one side and black on the other. They come in a few different designs.
